Stones, a two-act musical, tells the joyous, powerful and poignant story of Virginia Jones and Hannah Walker, two African American neighbors who are raising their sons alone in the vibrant Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago, 1920. Virginia’s dreams and plans for herself and her nine-year-old son are thrown topsy-turvy by the unexpected reappearance of Frank Malone, a returning World War I veteran and the love of her life nearly a decade ago in New Orleans. Malone unwittingly brings closer to the two families’ lives the dangers of the street—dangers heightened by the lingering hatred of the bloody Chicago Race Riot of 1919. Struggling with questions of love and responsibility and the physical dangers surrounding them, Virginia and Hannah come to terms with their own demons and how they see their children and themselves. Faith, friendship and the healing power of laughter sustain them through it all.
